Skeletal remains found behind kitchen wall of Houston home

Homeowners in Houston, Texas were shocked to discover a human skeleton inside the walls of their new home.

Authorities are trying to determine if the remains are those of Cerruti, who was declared a missing person in 2015 after neighbors contacted police because they hadn't seen her for a while and her mail was piling up.

According to a post on the West Heights Coalition website, police visited the home in the summer of 2015 after receiving calls about the house but didn't find Cerruti. The bones were removed from the wall Saturday evening and are now in the possession of the medical examiner's office.

Since Cerruti's disappearance, neighbors have reportedly debated what happened to the 61-year-old.

Police said in August of 2015 that a friend of Cerruti's reported her missing and said he had not spoken to her in about 6 months. A petition to foreclose on her home was issued in early March 2015, which was around the time she disappeared, and judgement was signed days before the missing person's report was filed.

A pile of wet sheetrock was the sole clue of what investigators say new homeowners uncovered Saturday while working in an attic.

Houston Police Detective Jason Fay confirmed to ABC 13 that "just bones" were among the remains.

"It's an insane thing", neighbor Mark Valadez said.

"Was it someone who was killed and stuffed in the wall, or did they accidentally pass away by ending up in the wall", he said.

"Literally this project is going to be in my backyard", Cerruti said.

In a similar, eerie story from 2011, a family made a disturbing discovery of bones, embalming fluid, and photos of dead bodies in the attic of the Knightstown, Indiana home that they had just moved into.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Science is working on identifying the remains and a cause of death. The couple later discovered that a previous tenant had worked at a funeral home.

They said she was very bright, well-read and creative and had a curious mind.

"Is it creepy? Yes", said Lorton.
