As per Exhibitor Relations, Furious 8 grossed $532 million globally this weekend, surpassing the global record held by 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which, although it didn't open in China like Furious 8, grossed $529 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Opening weekend figures for "The Force Awakens", however, do not include China because it didn't open in that country until three weeks after it premiered everywhere else.

Over its 16-year lifespan, The Fast and the Furious franchise has grossed more than $4.4 billion for distributor Universal Pictures.

The film brought in $432.3 million from the global markets, which beat out the $316.7 million brought in by 2015's Jurassic World.

The China opening alone brought in a record 190 million dollars (£151.7 million).

What is perhaps most impressive is that The Fate of the Furious, after just a single weekend in theaters, is now the fourth highest-grossing movie in the franchise overall. The movie had been estimated to open at $118 million to $127 million, according to analysts at BoxOfficePro.com and Hollywood Stock Exchange. Audiences agreed, handing "The Fate of the Furious" an A CinemaScore. It grossed an estimated US$100.2 million in the North American market, and premiered in over 60 worldwide markets, box office tracking website BoxofficeMojo.com reports.

But this isn't the only notable number the ensemble flick (which stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Ludacris, and Charlize Theron, among others) has racked up this weekend.

In the seventh, nearly $300 million of cars were destroyed, including one of the most expensive cars in the world. Furious 7 (Y 2015) was the final film in the series to star Paul Walker. Of that, $100.2 million was in the North American market, with the remaining $432.3 million coming from overseas.

But Universal is not about to apply the brakes: additional "Furious" chapters are planned for release in 2019 and 2021. Even if we take into account the earnings from the extended weekend, the movie came second to Furious 7.

The film easily overtook The Boss Baby, which held the top spot in the box office for the last two weekends.

"Beauty and the Beast" continued to draw viewers, earning $13.6 million in its fifth week out.
