"She is a big fan of the Prime Minister and whenever he comes on television she addresses him as "Modi Dada", Prakash said. "This probably explains why most doctors in private hospitals still take to prescribing drugs by brand name", said Dr Ahsan Ahmed, critical care specialist in Medica Superspecialty Hospital.

Earlier, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Kiran Hospital in Surat built at a cost of Rs 400 crore.

Generic drug active ingredients are chemically identical to their branded counterparts. Doctors prescribe them based on the experience of patients and feedback received, he added.

At the hospital inauguration, Modi said, "After the Vajpayee government, my government has brought in a healthcare policy after a gap of 15 years".

An 11-km-long synthetic saree covering the entire stretch depicting schemes launched by the Modi government was displayed along the entire route as welcome.

Modi will be visiting Israel on July 5 and even as his itinerary has not been made public, he in all probabilities will be skipping Palestine during his visit. "If one person falls ill in a middle class family, then the financial health of the family gets wrecked".

The veteran parliamentarian, who is a Lok Sabha member from Kangra, said in a statement that patients in India are denied generic drugs as doctors "benefit" from pharmaceutical companies for writing branded medicines. Last year, the PMO asked Niti Aayog to help develop an indigenous hub for the manufacture of bulks drugs including common painkillers which are mostly imported from China.

Modi is now in Silbvassa where he will inaugurate various government projects including Passport Seva Kendra, and Jan Aushadhi Kendra- a government initiative to boost the availability of quality generic medicines at affordable prices.

The next step towards reducing drug prices would be indigenisation. In this context he talked about the Union Government's initiatives to bring down the prices of medicines, stents etc.
