"I am a loyal soldier of the congress party and will continue to remain that, but in the current organisation where I am myself unsafe then how will I empower women in that organisation and that is why I hereby resign from the post of President of Delhi Mahila Congress".

Charging the Congress vice president with not meeting party leaders, she said Gandhi was "reluctant" to address "issues" within the party organisation.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit described the development as "unfortunate".

Amid continuing exodus of party leaders and criticism for the Congress from within its own fold ahead of the MCD polls, the party was dealt another body blow today. "During the Navratras on March 28, I along with a number of other women workers who were fasting, tried to meet Rahul Gandhi".

Asked if she was miffed with Delhi Congress' functioning, she said: "I am not angry with the party, I just want the party to be a little more active and a little more inclusive". "Why is he scared of meeting party workers who ask him questions", she said. "The one pertinent question we need to ask is why is Rahul Gandhi hiding?"

Singh even quoted other senior party leaders questioning her party's vice president's capabilities, saying "Rahul Gandhi is unfit to lead the party". "He is only interested in sycophants and not leaders who reason, question and ask", she said, alleging that the party has lost several senior leaders for that reason.

The sixth and last in a series of manifestos, the "youth manifesto" was released by Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken. Their plea to Mr Gandhi, she said, "fell on deaf ears".

"The party will go down to a new low under his leadership", she said, adding that "in front of the camera, they call for his anointing, but behind the camera they abuse him". "One of them has also filed a complaint of harassment against Ajay Maken and All India Mahila Congress President Shobha Oza", she added.
