Putin's comments come during a major diplomatic rift with the United States over a gas attack last week that killed 89 people in Syria's Idlib province.

Russian Federation blocked a Western effort at the UN Security Council on Wednesday to condemn the gas attack and push Assad to cooperate with worldwide inquiries into the incident.

"We will see the final outcome that will be perhaps in a long time period".

He went on to say that the USA missile strike on the Syrian air base was "a clear violation of global law".

"The perspective of the United States is that the recent chemical weapons attack carried out by Syria was planned, directed and executed by Syrian regime forces".

"U.S. and Russian interests, whether in Syria, toward North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, human rights, etc. are far too different despite President Trump's earlier interest in an understanding", White said.

Russian Federation says the chemicals that killed civilians last week belonged to rebel forces, not Assad's government, and accused the USA of acting on a false pretext.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the airstrike had destroyed 20% of the Syrian government's operational aircraft.

In response to last week's chemical attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, the USA fired 59 Tomahawk missiles against the Shayrat airfield on Friday, in the country's first strike against the regime since the war broke out six years ago. And there is some indication they are getting outside help. "I respect that. They don't want to expose their members to what they think could be a tough or controversial vote". But Tillerson repeated the administration's new belief that "the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end". Russian Federation is a strong country.

Haley's statement was the first clear indication that the new USA administration was taking diplomatic efforts seriously to end the war after repeatedly stating that fighting the Islamic State was its priority in Syria.

"It wasn't only a violation of the laws of war but it was a - we believe, a war crime", Toner said.

First, it would have to be ironclad proof, which could be hard to determine.

They plan to press Trump to explain whether he will conduct future attacks against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime as well as push for Congress to reassert its constitutional authority to declare war, congressional aides and lawmakers on the call told CNN.

For now, the official said the most specific evidence of Russian involvement remains a Russian drone that flew over the hospital that was treating people injured in the attack.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday that those strikes were not as effective as the USA claims. While the drone operator may not have known why the aerial vehicle was flying in the area, it was a Russian-controlled asset.
