Gov. Nathan Deal has endorsed Karen Handel for the 6th District seat to replace former U.S. Rep. Tom Price, her campaign announced Thursday.

"This is a very strongly Republican district and Republicans and Democrats are going to both use everything in their tool chest to try to win this seat", Dingell says.

Democrat Jon Ossoff drew 48.1 percent of the vote in Tuesday's special election, just shy of the 50 percent needed to win the most closely watched USA congressional race since Trump took office in January. Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, received 20 percent of the vote. President Donald Trump lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by almost 3 million votes, and won the Electoral College thanks to about 70,000 votes across three states. They hoped to clinch victory without a runoff by clearing 50% of the vote in the first round against the splintered GOP field. Handel is expected to win the reliably Republican district.

Handel tweeted Wednesday morning that the president called to congratulate her. Nevertheless, Mr Ossoff's strong showing offered proof of a re-energised Democratic base that could fire up a a torrid fight for the Congress mid-term elections next year, said analysts.

"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidate, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia", Trump tweeted late Tuesday.

After the June runoff between Ossoff and Handel was announced, Trump went back to Twitter to gloat. He took all but one percent of the vote secured by Democratic candidates, which means that Republicans as a whole won a narrow majority.

Democratic congressional candidate Jon Ossoff within 24 hours has gone from being praised and promoted to being doubted and criticized. The victor will succeed Tom Price, who resigned to become Trump's health secretary.

He published a similar message last week, after Republicans were forced to scramble to win a congressional special election in a ruby-red Kansas district.

DUNWOODY, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia congressional election is headed to a high-stakes runoff that's shaping up as a referendum on President Donald Trump ahead of crucial midterm elections next year. The suburban Atlanta district has been represented by a Republican for more than two decades. "His support will be critically important and should be looked at as a road map as we unify our party, bringing together Republicans and conservatives to stand against Democrats on June 20th", she said.
