Arsenal not giving up on top four: Arsene Wenger

The Gunners cut the gap to Manchester City to seven points with a 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough on Monday evening and although they have a game in hand, their manager knows there is no margin for error.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil sealed the win in which Wenger switched his system from a back four to a back three for the first time in his Gunners tenure.

"I thought we played well, we responded well to the goal we conceded".

"We had practiced on it before at some stage, but we like offensive football so this was a bit more defensive-minded for us".

When Alvaro Negredo levelled after Alexis Sanchez had given the Gunners a first half lead with a superb free kick, the Boro faithful would have felt that a vital three points to navigate a safe Premier League passage away from the drop zone was within their grasp.

Wenger said: "It's quieter than it used to be in England 20 years ago and they (current squad) are younger as well". That shows you that even at my age, you can change. "We need to keep fighting for them". It worked well in the first half. We were tested just after half-time when they came back to 1-1. "At 1-1 we found a response and managed to win", Wenger added.

Blue Jackets stay alive in National Hockey League playoffs with win over Penguins
Part of that special teams dominance came after Leon Draisaitl was tossed from the game for spearing Chris Tierney in the groin. If history tells us anything, being down 3-1 in a playoff series means the team with one win is clearly in the drivers seat.

It also takes Alexis one goal closer to equalling an Arsenal Premier League record now held by Emmanuel Adebayor. We kept going, kept getting into unsafe positions and in the end we came away with the three points.

Neville also thinks that Wenger will be able to briefly pause all of the speculation over his future should Arsenal win against City, which would put the club in their third FA Cup final in four years. We have been waiting for it for a few weeks and I just felt that when we scored, we had Arsenal on the back foot.

"There are still some chances where maybe we could have played better with some long balls, but the focus and commitment was there".

The hosts broke quickly down the right through Stewart Downing, whose cross was missed by Laurent Koscielny before Negredo steered it past Cech.

Boro are six points adrift of safety and without a win in 15 Premier League games, but caretaker boss Steve Agnew is refusing to give up hope.
