Sidney Crosby diagnosed with concussion, will miss Game 4 vs. Capitals

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was diagnosed with a concussion following a cross-check by Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen in the opening minutes of Monday's Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

However, the National Hockey League says the Washington defenseman won't face a disciplinary hearing for the incident.

Olczyk said that he agreed that there should have been a penalty on the play, but not a five-minute penalty and a game misconduct. League spokesman John Dellapina confirmed in an email that no hearing was planned.

January 18, 2008 - Crosby suffers a significant high ankle sprain in a 3-0 home loss to Tampa Bay and misses the next 21 games. Sheary, however, has not been ruled out for Wednesday night's Game 4 in Pittsburgh.

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said Monday night that Crosby would be evaluated overnight, and while he did not offer his opinion of the hit, some teammates did.

In Dec. 2011, Crosby took an elbow to the head from David Krejci during a game against the Boston Bruins, which kept him out of the game for about two months. The hit came just after Alex Ovechkin's stick connected with the top of Crosby's helmet as the Penguins star stumbled past the crease.

PMatt Niskanen's stick catches Sidney Crosby in the head after the Pens star was knocked off balance.

Despite the Game 3 loss, in which they rallied for two late goals to force overtime, the Penguins have a 2-1 lead and home-ice advantage in the series. Goaltender Matt Murray and defenseman Kris Letang are already out, absences Crosby's brilliance has helped the Penguins overcome.

I'm not really sure that this is the way the Capitals like to play. With Crosby on the ice, the Penguins were creating 4.9 even-strength goals per 60 minutes in the playoffs, second highest among forwards playing at least 100 postseason minutes in 2017.

If he's diagnosed with another concussion, there's no telling how many games Crosby could miss. Sullivan declined to speculate on Crosby's availability beyond Game 4.

"It's good for me", Malkin said. "Hard hits. Going after each other". Pittsburgh's post-season goals-per-game pace falls significantly without their captain, while their power-play effectiveness pretty much goes out the window - not the most encouraging news given the club's current predicament. Remove another major piece - one many regard as the best player in the world - and it's fair to ask whether the jenga tower that is their playoff run can remain standing.

"I think the next thing is watching how deliberate it was watching when the guy cross-checks him in the face".
