The Eagles sue Hotel California

The Eagles have filed a lawsuit against the owners of a Mexico hotel for using the name Hotel California without their permission, according to Reuters.

The suit was filed Monday against the 11-room hotel in Baja California Sur, saying the hotel owners "actively encourage" the notion that the hotel is somehow associated with the band. The band also accuses Hotel California bosses of applying to trademark the name through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. "Multiple online reviews make clear that US consumers who visit the Todos Santos Hotel and buy Defendants' merchandise do, in fact, believe that the Todos Santos Hotel is associated with the Eagles, which is not the case", the suit reads.

In reality, the complaint alleges, the hotel never sought a license to use the Eagles' Hotel California trademark, nor did the group grant a license to the establishment.

The hotel opened in 1950 - long before the song hit the airwaves - but went through a series of name changes. A Canadian couple bought the place in 2001, returning it to the original name, piping Eagles' songs into the lobby, and selling shirts dubbing it the "legendary" Hotel California.

Last year, the band The Eagles suffered a great loss, as one of the founding members, Glenn Frey, died of a long-term illness, said the Inquisitr. They also want a big chunk of money for damages and profits.

According to Henley, the song is about "a journey from innocence to experience. It's not really about California; it's about America".

Indeed, 23 of the 593 reviews of the hotel on TripAdvisor have the phrase "Eagles song". (It is generally considered, by virtue of comments the band has made in interviews, to be inspired by The Beverly Hills Hotel, or to be a composite of various Los Angeles establishments).
