Police have said the white gunman who killed one person and wounded seven more at the party, where most people were black or Hispanic, was despondent over a recent break-up.

One victim - Monique Clark, a mother of three - was fatally injured in the shooting.

The family of the gunman who shot seven people at a San Diego pool party over the weekend says they feel "unbearable pain" and can not explain the actions of Peter Selis.

Monique Clark, 35, was killed in the pool party shooting.

Another victim, Michigan State University graduate Charnee James, 24, was supposed to start a job at a marketing firm in San Diego on Tuesday but instead was in a hospital after being shot in both legs at the party, her grandfather, Emmuel Gullatt, told the Detroit Free Press.

While the birthday party was about 20 feet away from Selis, two white women who were closer were seemingly dismissed as targets. Witnesses say he was calmly and silently reclining in a chair, holding a beer, during the shooting.

"I think that we have to acknowledge that there is implicit bias", Chapman said, referring to the role of race in the shooting.

Ahearn said Selis told one black woman he would not shoot her if she stayed put.

The group immediately felt they were targeted due to their race, and continue to feel that way, Chapman said.

Chapman said Selis pointed at the white people who ran to help Clark and told them not to administer aid. "At no point in time".

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said Selis, who lived at the complex, was distraught about a recent breakup with his girlfriend. However, investigators have found "zero evidence" the violence was racially motivated, the chief said Monday. The church is located at 4321 Eastgate Mall in San Diego.

Clark's family has set up a GoFundMe.

It has also been reported that Sells, the son of a prominent dentist in San Diego, called his ex-girlfriend and had her on the phone as he began shooting so that she could hear the crime in progress.
