Two civilians, two policemen killed in Kashmir attack

Hospital sources initially said that two of the dead are police personnel while other two appear to be civilians.

A police officer said that gunmen attacked police party on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

Two policemen, two civilians and a militant were killed after ultras attacked a police party in south Kashmir's Kulgam district late on Saturday evening.

"A police party had gone to investigate a road accident when militants travelling in a vehicle opened fire at them", a police official said.

A senior police officer said while one militant was killed, another was injured. The militant was killed in retaliatory action, police said. He said the police also retaliated and even managed to snatch a pistol from one of the militants.

Director General of Police S P Vaid confirmed the death of the a policeman and added that indiscriminate firing by militants had led to the death of three civilians. On May 1, militants attacked a cash van of Jammu and Kashmir Bank and shot dead five policemen and two bank security guards in Damhal Hanji Pora area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir.

Meanwhile, security forces have cordoned off the area and started a search operation.

That time also the militants had retaliated as the Army troops were engaged in a reverse sweep, aterm used by the Army in which they carry out a surprise check of a location after having combed it earlier in the day. A combing operation was launched immediately to track them down, the police said.
