I Would Have Fired Comey Without Rosenstein's Letter

President Trump's "showboat" comment regarding ousted FBI Director James Comey in his NBC News interview got immediate pushback Thursday from the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee. That memo-which Rosenstein submitted to his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and which pointedly stopped short of calling for Comey to be fired-was then publicly described by multiple White House officials as the precipitating factor in Trump's decision to dismiss Comey. The president, a devoted viewer of coverage about himself, has given several interviews, most recently to NBC News' Lester Holt on Thursday, although he has favored Fox News' friendlier venue.

"I was going to fire Comey". Warner said he was offended at Trump's remarks. "And at that time he told me 'you are not under investigation'".

Trump said there was no "collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians", but added that "the Russians did not affect the vote". "I can confidently tell you that the majority, the vast majority of Federal Bureau of Investigation employees, enjoy a deep and positive connection to Director Comey". "I have the highest respect for his abilities and his integrity".

"And it has been the greatest privilege and honour of my professional life to work with him".

Trump also said that Comey told him two other times that he was not under investigation, once on the phone and once during a dinner that had been "arranged".

"Here's the thing, the difference between me and another president", Trump said. Officials interviewed by the Post said that while those cited in the letter questioned Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails, they did not suggest he be fired.

Comey's abrupt dismissal and the Trump administration's conflicting explanations have fueled Democratic outrage and a news media feeding frenzy with comparisons to Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal.

"There is supposed to be a line that is not crossed, including asking the FBI if you yourself are the target of the investigation", Moss told VOA. She answered: "No, I don't believe it is". And though the White House has asserted Comey lost the backing of rank-and-file agents, McCabe flatly said, "that is not accurate".

Defending the firing, White House officials said Trump's confidence in Comey had been eroding for months.
