A gunman has shot and killed a police chief and two nursing home staff members in the U.S. state of OH, according to police.

The police chief was a father of six with a seventh child on the way, Thorp said.

According to 911 dispatchers, an active shooter situation was reported in the 200 block East Main Street in Kirkersville at Pine Kirk Care Center.

DiSario responded to the scene from the nearby Kirkersville Police station on a call of a disturbance and a man in the street with a gun.

Investigators say two nursing home employees were also shot and killed.

Steven Eric DiSario had been serving as chief of the Kirkersville Police Department for only three weeks when he radioed in that he had a suspect in sight near the Pine Kirk Care Center at about 8 a.m., Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp told reporters.

In January 2016, Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty. No nursing home residents were injured.

WBNS TV reports that the gunman first shot the officer, then went into the nursing home and shot two more people before turning the gun on himself. The facility is secure, and it's unclear how the gunman got in, he said.

Thorp said authorities believe a fourth body is that of the shooter, but the shooter's motive and identification are not yet known.

Students who were en route to Kickersville Elementary School, which is near the nursing home, were diverted to Watkins Middle School, according to local reports.
