Pope Francis acknowledges 2000-case backlog in sex abuse cases

Pope Francis fully understands that Donald Trump is not an easy person, and promised to try to find a common ground with an American President.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) - Pope Francis acknowledged Saturday that the Vatican has a 2,000-case backlog in processing clerical sex abuse cases and says criticism of the slow pace was justified.

No Judgment While speaking to reporters, Francis also said he would say what he thinks sincerely to Trump and listen respectfully to what Trump has to say.

They famously had a tense exchange in February 2016, when Trump called the pope "a political person" for celebrating a Mass near the U.S. -Mexico border and Francis questioned the pope's Christianity over his support for a wall on that border.

Francis is due to meet with Trump on May 24 at the Vatican.

The Pope said that the new president deserved to be judged by his actions, not by "prophecies" of what he may or may not do.

The Pope said it is "most unwise" to be afraid of something that might happen.

Asked what people can expect to occur in a meeting between two leaders known to disagree on many issues, such as immigration and environmental policies, the pontiff responded: "There are always doors that are not shut".

During the in-flight press conference returning from Fatima to Rome on May 13, a reporter asked Pope Francis his opinion about President Trump's policies on issues such as immigration and climate change. "We need to find the doors that are at least slightly open", Francis said.

"If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS' ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president", Trump said. When asked if he hopes Trump will soften his stance after their meeting, the pope said it's a "political calculus" he can not afford. I prefer the Madonna as mother, our mother, and not a Madonna who is the head of a telegraph office, who every day sends a message at such-and-such an hour.
