Jays hope to take another step in recovery vs. Mariners

Despite getting behind in the first inning, Marco Estrada, would battle is way through six very effective innings.

TORONTO (AP) — Kevin Pillar homered with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday and a sweep of their four-game series.

"As hot as we were with the bat in Philadelphia", Mariners manager Scott Servais said, "we were just as cold here in Toronto".

Smoak went 3 for 3 with a walk against his former team. Justin Smoak had hit a two-run homer to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead in the sixth.

Mariners: Seattle returns home Monday to begin a three-game series against Oakland.

Seattle jumped on Estrada quickly in the first inning tonight to get out to a 2-0 lead.

Biagini's fastball peaked at 95 miles per hour in the first inning but was down to 91 in the fifth, an unsurprising dip given that he keeps pushing his pitch count higher. It's only the middle of May, so both Bautista and the Jays still have time to turn this thing around, but the ceiling keeps lowering on what a turned-around Toronto team can accomplish, especially as NY and Boston gain momentum at the top of the division.

"I'm glad I was able to make better pitches and turn things around after that".

The top of the Toronto order was active again in the fifth inning.

Even as he rounded the bases on his first career walkoff home run, Kevin Pillar was thinking about how he wanted to share the special moment with his mom. "When we have a lineup like that, hits are contagious, good swings are contagious, winning is contagious".

Selected from Triple-A Tacoma to start against the Blue Jays on Saturday, Weber left because of tightness in his shoulder after 3 2/3 innings. "Luis said 'yeah, right now.' So I did it".

The loss snapped Seattle's four-game winning streak and dropped them back below.500.

They can ask the Seattle Mariners that the break-even point can be elusive.

It could be said, then, that the true disappointment in Toronto isn't any of the players, but the strength and conditioning staff - thought it's far from clear that any of this is their faults.

De Jong was excited to face Toronto, the team that drafted him out of high school in 2012, and the team his cousin Jordan pitched for in 2007. There were so many times when I was out there, not wanting to throw (a curveball) because I didn't know if it was going to be an issue. Toronto traded De Jong to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015. Mariners INF/OF Taylor Motter started at second base with 2B Robinson Cano (strained right quadriceps) missing his fourth straight game.

Astros 3, Yankees 2: Defensive replacement Jake Marisnick made a ideal throw from left field to nail Jacoby Ellsbury at the plate for the final out, and Houston held off NY in a matchup between teams with the best records in baseball.

Maybe the Mariners can reclaim their bats at Customs when they cross the border on their way back to Safeco Field. The advantage of being careful is that they can backdate any 10-day DL to the date of his last appearance. Toronto recalled Campos from Triple-A Buffalo. Kendrys Morales (left hamstring) ran without pain during batting practice but did not start for the third straight game. Gibbons said Morales might be available to pinch hit Friday.

But in seven starts this season, Liriano has been far from consistent, as he now owns a 6.35 ERA while allowing 7.31 walks per nine innings. That's precisely how I felt after Brandon Guyer's three-run double put the Indians ahead of the Jays 7-4.

The three-hit day was a pretty significant rarity for Smoak, who's earned a reputation as an all-or-nothing type in the past. That now makes nine players on the Jays' 40-man roster who are currently out with injuries, and Liriano joins rotation mates in J.A. Happ and Aaron Sanchez on the shelf.

Working around the unsafe Mariners lineup, Biagini went six-plus innings of shutout ball.
