Red Bull says 75s deficit not a true picture

The team's auto, lagging far behind the Ferrari and Mercedes at the start of 2017, was rumoured to be dramatically remoulded when it runs at this weekend's Spanish GP.

This weekend marks the anniversary of Red Bull's driver pairing after Verstappen joined from Toro Rosso ahead of last year's Spanish Grand Prix.

Although Max Verstappen was able to qualify within six-tenths of a second of the pole time for Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari streaked clear in the race, with Daniel Ricciardo finishing 75 seconds off victor Lewis Hamilton at the chequered flag.

"Absolutely, we have gone forward", he said.

Max Verstappen says he is happy at Red Bull.

The only other driver from the leading trio of teams yet to triumph in Barcelona is Verstappen's Australian team mate Daniel Ricciardo, but the Red Bull has lagged Mercedes and Ferrari on pace so far this year.

"So far this weekend before qualifying we were still finding the balance a bit with the new upgrades, but I think in qualifying we were spot on". I think in qualifying we were pretty spot, I think the auto was pretty much by the best we've had all season.

The Australian conceded that the auto was performing better on the soft Pirelli tyre than the medium, and admitted Red Bull would need to extract more from the update before qualifying if it is to challenge Ferrari. "I believe that they will bring the upgrades we need to keep fighting". "It is much more stable and you can push much more".

"It will be hard to close those six tenths, but we are working on it". "It seems that Renault has chosen a path that is showing true potential but I think they've got some complications in terms of being able to extract the power unit's full potential".

"The target is to close the gap". "We're expecting some various new parts.but we can't really focus too much on performance until we have solved our reliability issues".
