2 women dead in crash on Route 44 in Plymouth

The driver of the Mercedes, Robert Skidmore, 66, of Cape St. Clair, was trapped inside his vehicle.

Maryland State Police said Murphy was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Route 50, one quarter mile east of the Severn River Bridge, when she struck a silver 2016 Mercedes SUV traveling east head on at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Laura Ashley Murphy, of Salisbury, crashed into a SUV on Wednesday killing her and the other driver.

A crash shut down all lanes of Route 50 at Exit 27/Route 2-eastbound and westbound-in Anne Arundel County Wednesday afternoon. Authorities received numerous 911 calls about a auto driving west in the eastbound lanes, and then, about a head-on crash.

The 11-month-old child, Murphy's son Maxwell Adrian Ellis, is at the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries. The Maryland State Highway Administration tweeted that the closures could be in place for hours.

One occupant, a 20-year-old Sagamore Beach woman, died at the scene. She was pronounced deceased on the scene. The infant was flown to a hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, state police said. EMS personnel extricated him from the vehicle and transported him by a second State Police medevac on the scene to Shock Trauma.

The vehicle that was struck by the wrong-way driver ended up in a wooded area off the highway.

The crash remains under investigation. Westbound Route 50 is open to traffic.
