Three other firefighter were injured.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood says because the shopping center had a gym and because of the time of day they conducted a search hand rescue. Their conditions have not been released by the hospitals, but Hood said both were expected to be OK.

The fire broke out at the Ingram Park shopping center in the 6800 block of Northwest Loop 410 just past 9 p.m. Thursday.

After a mayday call for two lost firefighters, medical director David Miramontes said in an e-mail, RIT teams were sent in and rescued one, who's now in critical condition at San Antonio Military Medical Center Burn Unit.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A San Antonio firefighter died and two others were seriously hurt battling a blaze at a strip mall that grew so intense that fire crews were forced to retreat as parts of the building collapsed. He said it was a very rough decision to leave a firefighter behind. "You work with people for a third of your life in this job, and any one of us would lay down our lives for another firefighter. They'll be going home for the reminder of the night to a loved one", Hood said.

About 100 firefighters stood in salute as an ambulance carried his body away early Friday. Because the situation was becoming too risky, Hood said the rest of the firefighters had to evacuate the building, leaving Deem behind.
