Koeman revealed last week that the England star would be sold if he did not sign a new contract by the end of this weekend.

And when asked if he was confident Barkley would stay, the Everton manager said: "No".

'I am not anxious because I like to work with players who want to stay. I don't know if he won't give an answer.

Everton are said to be considering offers for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Arsenal and Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson should Ross Barkley decide to leave the club, according to The Sun. We are already trying to get players in for next season in the front positions. "Even when he stays, there will be more competition for him next season".

Koeman says the Toffees are looking for players who operate in Barkley's position irrespective of whether or not the 23-year-old midfielder signs a new deal, with his current contract expiring in the summer of 2018.

Barkley has made 178 appearances for Everton since breaking into the first team in 2011, going on to score 27 goals and provide 28 assists. "Certainly for Everton they need a bit more freshness in their team and maybe Ross [Barkley] does, in terms of getting a new club, having to earn a place in a team and not have the comforts of being at home and living in his hometown".

And Koeman accepts it will now be tough for Lukaku - who like Barkley has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park - to overhaul England worldwide Kane. Either he accepts the contract or we sell the player.
