VOLKSWAGEN is going back to the future with the latest incarnation of its iconic GTI range. GTI carries specifications that are nearly a like-for-like match, with its 1.0 litre turbocharged TSI three-cylinder engine producing 115 PS from 5,000 to 5,500 rpm and 200 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm.

Expected to go on sale in the United Kingdom in early 2018 - and costing around £14.5k - the Up! The lightweight, no frills nature of the vehicle is reminiscent of the original Golf GTI which weighed 1,785 lbs and had 108 hp on tap.

We're yet to drive the auto, so can't comment on that just yet. Available exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the Up should finally offer the sort of driving experience we have been hoping for.

To many enthusiasts (and with apologies to Peugeot), the letters GTI mean one thing and one thing only, and that's a hot Golf. That means it has a red stripe across the grille with the GTI logo above it, as well as double stripes across the wide side sill panels and high-gloss black exterior mirror caps.

The interior includes features as a leather-trimmed sport steering wheel, a GTI gear knob, and a tartan pattern on the seats. With one exception, the colour palette is even dervived from the original Golf GTI - with Tornado Red, Pure White, Dark Silver, Black Pearl, and a new Costa Azul blue. The Up GTI rides 15mm lower on stiffened suspension, while at the back there is an extended rear spoiler and a red stripe along the base of the glass tailgate. GTi feel pretty lively in the real world. Once again all figures are reminiscent of those of the Mk1 Golf GTI launched four decades ago.
