Chris Cornell's wife, Vicky Cornell, issued a statement on Friday, May 19, following the death of the Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman.

Lawyer Kirk Pasich said Cornell, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan, which he said has a range of side effects, including suicidal thoughts.

On Thursday, the music legend was found dead in a hotel room, just hours after he had delivered a memorable performance at the Detroit's Fox Theatre with his band, Soundgarden.

Cornell's wife, Vicky Cornell, says in the statement when she spoke to her husband after the Detroit show, he told her he may have taken "an extra Ativan or two" and was slurring his words.

Lisa Croff, of the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, said they have Cornell's body and expect to release more information later this afternoon. The singer, whose life had appeared to take an upward turn over the past decade as he went sober, was found dead at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel after his family contacted first responders, police said.

"We're not going to release much until we get a report back from the medical examiner's office", Woody said. Asked about his past addictions, Mr Cornell often remarked that drug problems were overlooked among non-famous people.

"Chris Cornell he's like 12 years younger than me, he's my friend and we'd go out together for dinner".

In a 1994 Rolling Stone article, he described himself as a "daily drug user at 13, " who had quit by the time he had turned 14.

Soundgarden's current tour kicked off in late April and was planned to run through May 27. He never completed high school and said he barely talked to anyone for two years as a teenager.

Besides Soundgarden, Cornell founded the early grunge band Temple Of The Dog and sang with Audioslave - a supergroup with members of Rage Against the Machine.

Grief-stricken fans left flowers at memorials across Seattle on Thursday for the musician whose forceful, somber songs helped cement the city's place in rock history.

Soundgarden had one of the heaviest sounds in grunge with trappings of heavy metal, even though Cornell cited The Beatles, to whom he listened constantly as a child, as his biggest influence.
