US-led coalition aircraft struck a pro-regime convoy apparently transporting Shia militia men in Syria as it headed toward a remote coalition garrison near the Jordanian border last night, USA officials said.

US military officials have not yet determined if Syrian army forces were targeted in the strike or if they were militias aligned with the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Syrian state media provided no precise figures about the number of casualties, but the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said eight people were killed in the attack.

A member of the US -backed Syrian rebel forces told Reuters the strikes hit a convoy of Syrian and Iranian-backed militias that were heading toward a base used by usa and U.S. -supported forces.

There were no immediate details on any civilian injuries.

Syrian regime forces occupying five vehicles were targeted by USA airstrikes after breaching a "de-confliction zone", a USA official told CNN Thursday.

"We are not increasing our role in the Syrian civil war, but we will defend our troops", Mr Mattis said. Still, the strike prompted debate among lawmakers about the US role in the war and whether it was time for Congress to take up a new war authorization. Each time USA forces attack the Syrian government and their allies, it becomes more likely that someone on their side will retaliate against USA forces in Syria or Iraq, and before we know it we could be mired in fighting against several new enemies that we didn't have before.

"Such actions that were carried out against the Syrian armed forces. this is completely unacceptable".

The US has been militarily involved in Syria since 2014, but has for the most part avoided engaging directly in the conflict.

Islamic State attacked the base last month and recently regime forces have been pushing forward nearby, raising fears of a collision with coalition forces.

'This is not only an attack in Syria and against Syria, but also against Geneva [negotiations]. That was followed by a "show of force" by aircraft overhead and warning shots, the officials said.

Russian Federation supports the ceasefire in Syria while the USA weakens the effort fighting against terrorist groups, he added.

The Damscus-Baghdad highway was a major weapons supply route for Iranian weapons into Syria until Islamic State seized territory along the Iraqi Syrian border, regional intelligence sources says.
