Let all-party panel check EVMs, AAP tells poll panel

Yesterday, AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj had provided a live demo in the Delhi assembly to show that EVMs can be easily hacked.

According to PTI, CEC Nasim Zaidi made this offer during an all-party meet convened by the ECI here today to discuss the reliability of the EVMs - an issue flagged by opposition parties.

The AAP has been vocal in alleging that EVMs were tampered with in the assembly elections in Punjab and the civic polls in Delhi, both of which it lost. "We want all future elections to be conducted only by using EVMs with Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT)", Rai said. "The judgements in 30 of those cases have come and all 30 have been in favour of the EVMs being tamper proof", the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said.

Bhardwaj said that at tomorrow's all-party meeting, which he would attend along with two technical experts of the AAP, he would request that a committee be formed to access "suspicious" EVMs.

"They said EVM tampering is not possible".

Kejriwal has repeatedly claimed that the AAP's poll debacles have something to do with tampering of EVMs.

As the commission moved to settle the storm over EVMs, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) hurled a fresh accusation at the organisation for hiding the designs of the EVMs on which the machines were based.

"In addition to the EVM/VVPAT, the agenda will also cover making bribery in elections a cognisable offence, disqualification on framing of charges for the offences of bribery in elections and suggestions in VVPAT recount Rules", it had said in a statement last week.

"Such so called demonstration on extraneous and duplicate gadgets which are not owned by the ECI, can not be exploited to influence our intelligent citizens and electorate to assail or vilify the EVMs used by the Commission in its electoral process", it said.

RJD spokesperson Manoj Jha said by harping on the infallibility of EVMs, the EC was acting as the custodian of just the "instruments" and not the process as a whole.

The EC rejected AAP's EVM tampering claim, saying the "look-alike" gadget demonstrated in the assembly was not its machine. The party has also sought that "in randomly picked 25% of the total polling booths in a constituency, EVM counting results must be tallied with the VVPAT slips to check the accuracy of the EVM".

He also filed three complaints with the CBI against Kejriwal, Jain and AAP leaders who allegedly misused party funds on foreign trips. "So, in 2013-14, the AAP showed a donation amount of Rs 50.64 crore in the affidavit, Rs 19.82 crore on its party website, but to the EC it told that the figure stood at only Rs 6 crore". However, the only way to secure these against manipulations is to have a paper trail system.
