Trump denies asking Comey to drop probe, decries 'witch hunt'

According to Schmidt's report, Trump short-circuited what Comey considered to be the proper channels and etiquette by requesting information as to when it would be officially acknowledged that the president himself was not personally under investigation.

This was different than the version of events he told NBC News' Lester Holt last week. The FBI is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including looking into any possible links between Trump campaign associates and the Kremlin.

As previously reported, Trump's team also set up a dinner meeting with Comey where the President is reported to have demanded loyalty of the FBI Director.

The committee is one of several on Capitol Hill investigating possible collusion between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

The President made his displeasure known in a Thursday morning tweet, calling the Russian Federation investigation a "witch hunt".

In another tweet Thursday morning, he claims, "With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel (sic) appointed!" "I think we have a very divided country because of that and many other things". On Wednesday, the president reportedly interviewed four candidates for Comey's former position at the White House.

"All over the world, no matter where you go, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is special", Mr Trump said.

Afterward, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told reporters that "everything he said was that you need to treat this investigation as if it may be a criminal investigation". Claire McCaskill said that Rosenstein, who has come under scrutiny for being perceived as the inspiration for Trump firing Comey, told the senators that Trump was planning on terminating Comey before the deputy attorney general wrote his letter of recommendation.

This was one of several interactions that Comey believed jeopardized the FBI's independence, the Times reports, and he instructed the president on the proper way to receive details about investigations: have the White House counsel send inquiries to the Department of Justice.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Trump called Comey weeks after he took office on January 20 and asked him when federal authorities were going to say Trump was not under investigation.
