Prosecutors are asking for a prison sentence of 21 to 27 months.

"I am guilty, your honor", Weiner, who also has to give up his iPhone, said through tears. "I apologize to everyone that I have hurt".

"Beginning with my service in Congress and continuing into the first half of past year", his statement said, "I have compulsively sought attention from women who contacted me on social media".

Weiner, a Democrat who represented a New York City congressional district for more than a decade, resigned in 2011 after a scandal over an explicit photo he accidentally sent from his Twitter account.

Weiner wept as he read a prepared statement to the court admitting that he "compulsively sought" women for "sexual and non-sexual communication" which has had "devastating consequences" to him and his family.

"I accept full responsibility for my conduct", he said. Sentencing has been scheduled for September 8, 2017.

Acting Manhattan US Attorney Joon H. Kim told reporters after the hearing that Weiner's behavior "was not only reprehensible, but a federal crime, one for which he is now convicted and will be sentenced".

Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner pleaded guilty today in NY to a sexting relationship with a Gaston County teenager that may have helped turn the presidential election.

Weiner sent numerous sexually explicit messages to the girl over a series of months, according to text messages and photos obtained by The Daily Mail.

The investigation infamously intersected a year ago with the 2016 presidential campaign, when agents seized devices and found emails between Hillary Clinton and Huma Abedin, Weiner's estranged wife and a top Clinton adviser.

Luckily for Weiner, the teen didn't press charges because the texting was consensual.

The investigation is what prompted the final review in October 2016 of Hillary Clinton's private email server, ABC News reported past year.

Weiner ran for New York City mayor in 2013 before the second sexting scandal hit.

Weiner also claimed at the time that he was "likely" the subject of a hoax.

She announced their separation in August after The New York Post published sexually suggestive photographs that he shared with a woman while his four-year-old son apparently slept nearby.
