Dish Integrates Alexa With Hopper DVR

Starting today, subscribers can use Alexa voice integration to streamline nearly any DISH experience.

The days of frantically searching for a lost TV remote may soon be coming to an end, at least for Dish customers, as Amazon's digital brain Alexa can now control Dish DVRs. Then, enter the code into the Alexa app, select Activate, and click Done. And of course anything that can do from the Echo or Echo Dot, it can also do here, like set alarms, read your news out loud to you, check the weather and traffic updates, etc.

For example, you can search for something to watch by asking Alexa to tune to a given channel or program, or you can seek out content by actor or genre.

Dish said it's the first TV provider to offer "direct compatibility" with Alexa.

If you have all of those things, just sign into your Alexa account, enable the DISH skill, and follow the on-screen directions.

Dish is getting serious about voice control.

Dish customers will also be able to play, pause, fast-forward and rewind DVR content and live TV (except for fast forwarding, obviously), also just by asking Alexa.

"Hopper and Alexa introduce next-level convenience that redefines the way TV fits into our lives", said Niraj Desai, the vice president of product management at Dish. This marks the first time customers can use a media player to access Dish Anywhere on any TV with an HDMI input, either at home or on the go. DISH Network Corporation is a Fortune 200 company.

In other words, it's to Dish's advantage that it keeps its existing pay TV customers happy - which means, in this case, mimicking the feature set that can be found on modern-day streaming players, while offering something that feels more cutting edge than its rivals.
