No joke: Linux is coming to Microsoft's app store

To use the new features in Windows 10, being shown Thursday at Microsoft's Build conference for developers in Seattle, users will need a Microsoft account to sign in on those devices and share information. It is important to note that this design focus is not a Windows 10 FCU feature, but something Microsoft intends to implement in apps across platforms and device types.

Microsoft will try to make Windows 10 more versatile with a wave of new features for creating memories, exploring virtual scenery and hopscotching from personal computers to mobile devices. They can sync across both Windows and Mac devices and build native mobile apps for iOS, macOS, Android, and the web. While it originally planned to have a billion Windows 10 installs by 2018, it later revised that projection to sometime after next year.

Microsoft's goal is to make developing on Windows a better experience than using a flavor of Linux. The new design will be known as the Microsoft Fluent Design System. Users will get an experience that's similar to what they get from the existing iTunes for Windows app.

It's unclear if there will be any changes to the app now that it's Windows-official. Autodesk will continue to use UWP to extend its Windows Store offerings to include support for Windows Mixed Reality in Autodesk Stingray, a 3-D game engine and real-time rendering software. The controller will work without requiring the placement of sensors in a room.

Further, Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft announced that they have reached 500 million Windows 10 monthly active devices. In other words, Microsoft may have been able to encourage Apple to retrofit iTunes for Windows to the Windows Store by showing them how easy it would be.

"We are building Windows to be the platform that empowers everyone to create", Terry Myerson, Microsoft's top Windows executive, wrote in a blog post. Though visually there are common elements, the system is created to work across virtual/augmented reality, phones, tablets, desktop PCs, games consoles, using mice, keyboards, motion controllers, voice, gestures, touch, and pen, with the interactivity and input optimised to each particular form factor. Acer will sell a Windows Mixed Reality headset and motion controller bundle priced at $399 Dollars this holiday season.
