Cornell, who was on tour in Detroit at the time of his death, was 52. Before a home game that evening against the White Sox, the Mariners honored the memory of the grunge-era icon with a pregame tribute and by playing his music during the contest.

The singer who was 52 years old, was found dead in his MGM Grand hotel room in downtown Detroit Wednesday night after performing at the Fox Theater in the city.

He said Cornell wife and family were shocked by it.

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney were among the most high-profile bands to come out of Seattle and dominated the pop culture landscape of the early and mid-1990s.

" 'I would live without both parts, ' Cornell answered". I don't know if Cornell influenced my vocals per se, but there is some similarities there.

Formed in 1984 by Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, Soundgarden's third studio album, Badmotorfinger, in 1991 spawned the singles Jesus Christ Pose, Rusty Cage and Outshined.

Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale said he was in total shock after hear of the death.

"Chris Cornell, a friend of mine, a friend of all of us from Soundgarden, died today and we have lost one of the most lovely voices in rock and in history".

KEXP, Seattle's popular independent radio station, paid tribute to Cornell all day.

"Chris Cornell passed away late last night in Detroit, MI".
