Kasowitz has represented Trump a number of times in the past and has a long relationship with the president, Business Insider reported.

While the list could still be changed or modified, sources told the Post that the top contenders now include Robert Giuffra Jr., Marc Kasowitz, Theodore Olson and Reid Weingarten.

The four people briefed on the discussions requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

It said the president, who declared himself the victim of the "greatest witch hunt" after a special prosecutor was appointed to oversee the investigation into Moscow's efforts to tip the United States elections, is favouring the use of a team of lawyers rather than a single attorney.

Kasowitz has represented Trump on a "wide range of litigation matters for over 15 years", according to the biography posted on the website for his firm, Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP.

"I encountered and am aware of information and intelligence that revealed contacts and interactions between Russian officials and USA persons involved in the Trump campaign that I was concerned about because of known Russian efforts to suborn such individuals", Brennan told members of the House Intelligence Committee.

Weingarten is a high-profile D.C. defense attorney who represented former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.

Legal experts say this could be a good idea as investigations into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russians to swing the 2016 election continue deepening.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

President Donald Trump is seriously considering hiring private counsel to help manage fallout from multiple controversies that have arisen over the last few weeks related to Russian Federation investigations, The Washington Post reported Monday.

The expected move comes less than a week after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed a special counsel, former FBI director Robert Mueller, to oversee the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the US presidential election. That feeling, in part, drove the president to fire James Comey, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, and fallout from that decision led Justice officials to tap Mueller as special counsel.
