'Weak and wobbly' Theresa May makes U-turn on social care cap

The Tories' lead was as high as 20 percentage points in April, and crucially the four polls were conducted after the party's manifesto launch on Thursday.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday amended an unpopular campaign proposal for elderly care just days after unveiling it, prompting accusations that she could not be relied upon in upcoming Brexit negotiations. "The only things he has left to offer in this campaign are fake claims, fear and scaremongering", said Theresa May in Wrexham.

James Wharton, working to be re-elected for the Conservatives in Stockton South, said: "Every vote counts and every vote for Labour makes Jeremy Corbyn stronger". And that consultation will include an absolute limit on the amount people have to pay for their care costs.

"So let me reiterate: We are proposing the right funding model for social care".

Andrew Gwynne, Labour's election co-ordinator, said: "Theresa May has thrown her own election campaign into chaos and confusion".

Last week the Tories announced reform to the social care system in its manifesto.

The manifesto detailed proposals to charge people with assets worth over £100,000 for care within their own homes, the cost of which is now largely state-funded.

"The (latest ICM) figures were widely seen as evidence that the Tory social care plans had backfired", the Guardian wrote on Monday. "Our social care system will collapse unless we make some important decisions now about how we fund it".

With polls tightening sharply and Conservative candidates reporting hostility on the doorsteps towards the policy, the prime minister agreed to make a crucial change, introducing an upper limit on the sum anyone will have to pay for care in their lifetime.

"And we also said that we would protect £100,000 of your savings so, however expensive your care, you can pass something on to your family".

Jeremy Corbyn has condemned "all acts of violence from wherever they came" during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, but declined to specifically denounce the IRA as terrorists. They provide the beginning of a solution to social care without increasing taxes on younger generations.

The policy has been criticised for making long-term illnesses such as Alzheimer's much more expensive to people and their families than other illnesses, garnering the moniker "dementia tax".

"That tells you everything you need to know about Jeremy Corbyn's answer to the problem".

"Let's be clear. This plan replaces the existing system where people often get poor quality care - and stand to lose nearly all their savings and assets, including the family home".

Backbencher Wes Streeting derided the prime minister as "weak and wobbly" as she announced a surprise cap on social care costs after days of criticism. Then, one day after MPs returned to Westminster after Easter recess, she called an emergency press conference and said she would be holding an election. When May called the snap election for June 8, surveys indicated she would win a landslide comparable with Margaret Thatcher's 1983 majority of 144 seats in the 650-seat parliament.
