British Airways says computer outage causing global delays

The airline said it has suffered a "major IT systems failure" and that it would be cancelling all flights from the airports until 6 p.m.

The UK's flag carrier apologised for the "global system outage" and said it was "working to resolve the the problem as quickly as possible".

He added: "We haven't been told very much just that there is a worldwide computer system failure".

Speaking from the plane, Miss Davis said the air conditioning had been off "so I don't think we will be going anywhere any time soon", but added that the passengers had been kept informed by their pilot and given water while they remained seated.

BA aircraft landing at Heathrow are unable to park up as outbound aircraft can not vacate the gates, which has resulted in passengers being stuck on aircraft.

She said: "When we finally boarded the captain came out and told us their computer systems were down worldwide".

While another passenger, Sarah Tegerdine, posted: "Utter disgrace".

In August a power surge near United States airline Delta's Atlanta headquarters caused computers to crash and led to widespread delays across Delta's entire network.

British Airways has not responded to a request for comment.

It comes as thousands of families had to fly off for half term without their luggage after Gatwick's baggage sorting system broke down - holding up 3,000 bags. Passengers are reverting to online news sites to find out their flights are cancelled.

However, the only circumstances in which the airline is not legally obliged to provide compensation is if the flight was cancelled due to reasons beyond the airlines control, such as a volcanic eruption, a strike or extreme weather.

Teacher Gemma Richardson, 30, who is 24 weeks pregnant, said "it was chaos" when she and her husband arrived at the airport with their two-year-old daughter.

Delays have also been reported at Gatwick, Leeds and Belfast airports, and elsewhere in Europe.

Travellers are able to claim compensation under European Union law unless the disruption has been caused by factors outside of BA's control.
