Mika Brzezinski, his daughter, took to instagram, to confirm his death.

Although he played a secondary role in the Camp David negotiations that produced the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty, Brzezinski and his staff did contribute to expanding the US role in the greater Middle East by crafting the Carter Doctrine as a response to the Iranian crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

He had developed his ties to Carter on the Trilateral Commission, the group created by the banker David Rockefeller in 1973 as a forum for political and business leaders from North America, Western Europe and Japan.

Rodney Martin, a former congressional staffer, argued that "Brzezinski's death marks the beginning of the end of the Neocons".

He was a driving force behind the failed U.S. commando mission to rescue the hostages, after which he resigned.

President Carter paid tribute to him as a "superb public servant".

Before the seizure of the USA embassy in Tehran in 1979, Vance had resisted Brzezinski's proposal that Washington back a military crackdown against Iran's radical Islamic forces. During the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, Brzezinski believed negotiations were going nowhere and started pushing for military action.

Carter eventually accepted Brzezinski's proposal for the ill-fated mission, in which eight servicemen died. He took part in the long-awaited reunification of Europe as a delegate to proceedings created to bring the former Soviet republics into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

After serving in the Carter administration, Brzezinski continued to be a major voice in USA foreign policy. "Soviet agenda", as he noted in a memoir four years later.

On the NewsHour in 2012, he discussed his book about a shift in global power with the NewsHour's Jeffrey Brown.

He was an outspoken critic of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq from the very beginning, and he was also a vocal critic of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Brzezinski had three children with his wife Emilie.
