"We gon' try our best to make up for previous year", he told the Waterfront Park audience, and they did, offering up songs including "Midnight Rider", "Melissa" and a cover of his friend Jackson Browne's "These Days".

Cher moved on with Kiss guitarist Gene Simmons but talked about her ex and how she tried to help him in his battles with drug and alcohol in an interview with People in April 1978, noting that "nobody ever made me feel as happy as Gregory did".

The group later added bassist Berry Oakley, percussionist Jai Johanny Johanson (known as Jaimoe) and Betts and became the Allman Brothers Band. Rising above it all was Gregg's voice.

"I can tell when he's there, man", Allman said.

"I think it's a sad day for Rock "n" Roll because we lost one of the greats", said Ricky Cheatwood, who lives in Savannah.

As teenagers, they began playing a series of bands, including racially integrated ones, a rarity at the time in the South.

Veteran concert promoter Conlon first encountered Allman in 1969, during the band's famous impromptu performance at Piedmont Park.

They were a scruffy-looking, denim-clad assemblage and Gregg stood out with his long golden-blond hair.

The musical icon will be buried at Rose Hill cemetery in Macon, GA, though a funeral date has not yet been set, Lehman added. However two years later tragedy struck when Duane was killed in a motorcycle crash.

The rest of the band was stricken but carried on and put out another well-regarded album, Eat a Peach.

The band's 1971 set "At Fillmore East", recorded at Bill Graham's NY hall, was a commercial breakthrough and sailed to the top of the charts. You were always thoughtful and soft spoken and carried yourself with an aloofness that only your closest friends knew was an actual shyness (and perhaps a bit of amusement at how ludicrous the hugeness of the whole "rock star thing" really was - but like it or not you were the epitome of a rock star). Together, they have a son, Elijah, who was born in 1976.

In 1977, Allman and singer Cher, to whom he was married at the time, released the album "Two the Hard Way".

What had once been a familial group split up over what was seen as Allman's betrayal. Allman idolized his older brother, Duane, eventually joining a series of bands with him.

As he confessed in his 1987 hit, Gregg Allman was "no angel".

Allman told Southern Living magazine in 2007 that he became captivated by Savannah as a young boy during his family's travels.

A seminal voice of Southern rock is gone. "He showed me his tattoos. his voice. his voice. his soul." - musician Melissa Etheridge, via Twitter. Earlier today, the Blues Traveler frontman described the first time Gregg Allman invited him to sit in as an experience akin to walking on the moon.
