He announced August 5 that he was "under his doctor's care at the Mayo Clinic" due to "serious health issues".

The musical icon will be buried at Rose Hill cemetery in Macon, GA, though a funeral date has not yet been set, Lehman added. He has an album called Southern Blood pegged for a 2017 release. The band's original drummer, the great Jaimoe Johanson, was black, and the other five members of the group were these skinny, long-haired hippies who wore bellbottoms and silver jewelry and unbuttoned their shirts too far and had grown up listening to soul and rhythm and blues records.

He took up the guitar before Duane did, but he was a keyboardist and vocalist by the time the two worked together in local bands while they were in high school. Mr. Allman also had a son with Mary Lynn Green, the musician Michael Sean Allman, 51, and a daughter with radio journalist Shelby Blackburn, Layla Brooklyn Allman of the group Picture Me Broken, 24.

As a member of the band he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Country legend Charlie Daniels tweeted, "Gregg Allman had a feeling for the blues very few ever have".

"I'm not big into that whole legacy thing, and my brother never gave half-a-damn about that stuff, but I'm proud that after 45 years, the Allman Brothers went out on top, " he said.

He began performing in the mid 1960s with his brother and they would later become known as The Allman Brothers Band.

Cher has shared a simple but emotional message in remembrance of Gregg Allman, whom she was married to briefly in the '70s. Newsworthy enough to have left an impression on a young boy from Virginia whose best friend was already that Rock and Roll sound despite being a full 8 or nine years out from buying my first Allman Brothers LP (Fillmore East of course). He said that after getting sober, he felt "brand new" at the age of 50.

No cause of death was immediately given, but the statement said he had "struggled with many health issues over the past several years". I didn't believe it for a long time until somebody shoved it [Zappa's recording] right in front of my face and said here play it yourself.

It may sound silly, but I started to realise my own as the albums of my youth started to be referred to as the "classics" from yesterday.

Allman, who had a liver transplant in 2010, played keyboard and guitar and sang with a rich, growling voice but was known for his gentle manner and long blond hair.

"I think it's because you're doing something you love", Allman said in a 2011 interview with The Associated Press. And in 2012, also along with the rest of the band, Allman received a Grammy award for lifetime achievement.

Born Dec. 8, 1947 in Nashville, Tenn., Gregg Allman's life was touched early by tragedy.
