Donald Trump marks first Memorial Day as president

President Donald Trump marked his first Memorial Day in office with a somber service at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday.

"On this day, it's so important that each of us pay a well deserved tribute to those fearless Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great nation who ensured for us the freedoms we now enjoy", he said. "We pay tribute to those fearless souls who raced into gunfire, roared into battle, and ran into hell to fa". Robert Kelly of the Marines, was killed when he stepped on a land mine in 2010 in southern Afghanistan.

Earlier in the morning, the president visited the cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where he placed a wreath and reflected silently as a bugle player performed taps.

In the second, Trump says: "I look forward to paying my respects to our fearless men and women on this Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery later this morning".

It was a rare break from the controversy-filled days of Trump's presidency so far. He said remembering those we've lost on Memorial Day is extremely important. "They died in war so that we could live in peace", Trump said, according to the New York Daily News. Trump said. "I believe that God has a special place in heaven for those who laid down their lives so that others may live free".

"I know I speak for millions of grateful Americans when I say, 'thank you, '" the president said.
