Dozens of gravestones mark those from the Stateline who died serving in the Armed Forces, from the Army, to the Marines and the Air Force.

Veterans and community members attended a Memorial Day Ceremony at the New Bern National Cemetery Monday morning.

People waved and screamed to the sky as The Hooligan Flight Team opened the annual Memorial Day service at Fort Custer National Cemetery on Sunday, May 28 to honor veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

But Memorial Day is not really a celebration, which is why we don't say "Happy Memorial Day". Glenn Wright, a Vietnam War veteran and a member of the local post's leadership, paraphrased Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in his brief remarks and noted that Memorial Day was once known as Decoration Day in the era after the Civil War.

The proclamation comes, according to the White House, as "we commemorate the centennial anniversary" of America's entry into World War I, when more than 4.7 million Americans served, representing more than 25 percent of the American male population between the ages of 18 and 31.

Kishwaukee Cemetery Association presented the Memorial Day ceremony. "Blessings protected by the selfless service of men and women in uniform standing watch over their nation ready to defend and protect us from evil at a moment's notice".

NEW YORK (AP) - Americans marched in Memorial Day parades Monday and came together in solemn ceremonies to pay their respects to those killed in service to the country. "We are gathered here today to honor all our fallen military men and women".

"Ten Gold Star families ... held hands, they prayed and they revealed nightmarish memories of learning about the deaths of their loved ones - openly sharing so that they can continue to heal". "Show them your love for they are near and far from their families". So go, enjoy the rest of this Memorial Day weekend and all the weekends to come.

The 268 miniature flags were placed by the Tahoe Douglas Elks.
