Cumbria Police has launched a new drink-drive campaign.

Superintendent Chris Moon, Head of Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: "In the summer months when the weather tends to be nicer people will often stay out drinking later into the evening".

"With hundreds of lives lost each year it's important that we reinforce the warnings about how unsafe drink-driving can be - and that's why I give my full support to this campaign".

The consequences if found guilty of a drug driving offence is the same as for drink driving. "It simply isn't worth the risk".

Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Countryside, Councillor Carolyn Thomas, said:We want people to enjoy themselves over the summer months.

"I'd like to encourage members of the public to work with us for a safer community by reporting anyone they suspect is drink or drug driving by calling 101 with details about the vehicle they are driving, registration and the location so that our officers can seek out those who commit these offences".

"Their selfish and irresponsible actions could result in someone getting seriously injured or even killed and one of our officers, as well as colleagues from the fire and ambulance services, having to deal with the horrific consequences".
