Edinson Volquez, who had failed to record a win in his first eight games with the Marlins, followed up a one-run, three-hit victory with an incredible no-hitter against the playoff-hopeful Arizona Diamondbacks.

Volquez, who was a shade over 60 pitches through six innings on Saturday, walked two and those two were the only baserunners he allowed on the day for Major League Baseball's first no-no of the young season and the first since April of last season.

The Marlins, who have cooled off an Arizona team that arrived hot, will try right-hander Vance Worley (0-2, 4.50 ERA) against Diamondbacks right-hander Braden Shipley (0-1, 6.75).

Volquez also almost left the game in the first inning after rolling his ankle in a collision with Rey Fuentes while the pitcher was covering first base. Volquez needed a couple minutes to recover, before deciding to stay in the game. Saturday's effort was the first no-hitter of Volquez's career and sixth in Marlins history, the most recent being Henderson Alvarez's no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers on September 29, 2013.

Volquez (2-7) capped his 10-strikeout performance in style by fanning the side in the ninth inning, including Chris Owings on three pitches to end the game.

"I felt that wasn't the best of what he can offer us", Lovullo said. Volquez became just the 10 hurler since pitch counts have been tracked to combine a Maddux with a no-hitter. During that span, 37 no-hitters were thrown, but Volquez was one of just three pitchers to be incredibly economical with his pitches.

Miami (23-32) has won six of its past seven games.

Arizona cut its deficit to 4-2 in the third.

The Marlins' defense came up big for him in the fourth. Giancarlo Stanton drew a walk, advanced to second on a hit by Marcell Ozuna and scored on a soft single to shallow left field by Bour.

Volquez finally notched his first win after holding the Phillies to one run and three hits over six innings on Monday.

From there, Volquez said "it was just one of those days when you totally don't know what's going to happen". What a lot of people don't notice, his fastball command and the way he was able to pound righties in with his fastball and get ahead of lefties with his fastball. "His changeup is good every day".

Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt (13 homers, 43 RBIs) is 3-for-10 in the series after going 3-for-22 in his previous six games. OF Gregor Blanco (thumb) was out of the lineup for a second straight day, and the Diamondbacks said RHP Braden Shipley will start in place of RHP Taijuan Walker (blister) on Sunday.

The Twins overcame two solo home runs from Los Angeles' Kole Calhoun, while keeping Albert Pujols stuck at career home-run No.599.
