Monica Abeyta, 30, was charged with felony child abuse after police say her 3-year old found a handgun in the house and fired it, striking the 2-year old.

"I've known him since he was, you know, first born", said Alazia Gray, the children's babysitter. The gun normally was kept in a lockbox, she said, but she heard a noise and became paranoid the night before and kept the gun with her as she slept. He stressed the importance of keeping loaded weapons secure and out of children's reach.

Police told News 5 the 3-year-old was playing with a gun and accidentally shot his 2-year-old brother.

The marine patrol deputy with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office died Thursday during a training exercise on Lake Hartwell.

The toddler shot by his brother on Sunday is now in stable condition.
