Andy Murray continued to play himself into form as he eased past Karen Khachanov to set up a Slam rematch with Kei Nishikori.

World No 1 Murray, the runner-up in Paris to Novak Djokovic in 2016, brushed aside Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Nishikori overcame a bagel start to beat Fernando Verdasco in four sets, but it will remain to be seen how much that and his carried over third round match affect him as he looked mighty tired as he reached the quarter-final.

Even his first two rounds looked edgy but the Murray of old seemed to have returned in the battle against Juan Martin Del Potro, and Murray was clinical on his way his seventh Roland Garros quarter-final.

Cilic knows what it takes to win a major title - he topped Nishikori in the 2014 U.S. Open final - so he appreciates his easy path. It's a matter of attitude. I think he started really well, the court bounces really high today and he was using a very heavy forehand and I was running side to side.

"The draw looked fairly tough in the beginning but now you would have to say you would be somewhat surprised if he didn't get at least to the semis, if not the final".

Russian Khachanov was the youngest man to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros for eight years, and he showed enough in this match alone to suggest he will be going a lot further in the not-too-distant future.

But Murray stepped up again immediately both times and served out the win in two hours and four minutes.

Murray paid tribute to the victims of recent terror attacks in the United Kingdom post-match and was given a standing ovation by the crowd.

"Terrible tragedy in London, also in Manchester only six or seven days ago". "I am sure everyone will join me. we share our thoughts and prayers with everyone". It's something that has affected large parts of Europe and all over the world.

Tomas Berdych - knocked out by Khachanov in the second round - has parted company with coach Goran Ivanisevic.

"Each match, I feel like I played better".

"It was hard conditions -pretty windy out there".

"Wish him all the best in the future and I am committed to go after my goals with current team". I've hit the ball cleaner and started to find the right shots at the right moments.

"Come a long way the last 10 days or so", Murray, runner-up to Novak Djokovic past year, told reporters.

But the eighth seed hit back to triumph 0-6 6-4 6-4 6-0 and reach his seventh grand slam quarter-final.

Wawrinka beat 15th seed Gael Monfils 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 to earn a ninth win from 10 meetings with French opponents at the tournament. Wawrinka, meanwhile, is 11-2 against quarterfinal opponent No. 7 Marin Cilic, who was leading 6-3, 3-0 when Kevin Anderson stopped because of an injured left hamstring.

South African Anderson, who beat Britain's Kyle Edmund in the third round, was 6-3 3-0 down to Cilic when he pulled out.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic can set up a semifinal showdown with victories.
