Comey is set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday about the investigation into Trump's connections to Russian meddling in the 2016 election cycle. It was there that he represented Chris Christie during the scandal that accused the New Jersey governor and aides of closing bridge lanes as political retaliation against the mayor of Fort Lee.

He was also a member of the Corporate Fraud Task Force, which was formed by Bush following several corporate accounting scandals. Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Skilling for fraud, conspiracy and insider trading. The response in the Republican-controlled Senate, where Wray would only need a simple majority vote, was supportive but cautious. Trump had entertained current and former politicians for the role.

Trump announced his plans to nominate Wray, a former Justice Department official under George W. Bush, earlier in the day on Twitter.

"I know that he will again serve his country as a fierce guardian of the law and model of integrity once the Senate confirms him to lead the FBI", Trump said.

He graduated with honours from Yale University in 1989 and in 1992 from Yale Law School.

Mr Wray worked for the Justice Department under President George W Bush. Scrushy was later convicted in a separate bribery cases.

Wray left DOJ and eventually became a partner at King & Spalding, considered one of Atlanta's top law firms.

Wray is a personal attorney for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a major supporter of Trump who is often mentioned as a possible future high-ranking administration post.

Some lawmakers said Wray's background seems solid, but cautioned that he needs to demonstrate he can act independently of the White House.

"The President asked us to look for an FBI Director who has integrity, who understands and is committed to the rule of law, and who is dedicated to protecting the American people from crime, gangs, and terrorists", Sessions' statement concluded.
