POTUS Should Tweet Less — Survey Says

The president appeared to double down on his Twitter usage when White House officials announced that Trump plans to live tweet former FBI Director James Comey Senate hearing Thursday. What if Trump's Twitter account is hacked or compromised.

"Functionally, his tweets are presidential statements", Neiss told TIME.

In its effort to regain control of its message, the White House has curtailed press briefings, redirected questions on the Russian Federation investigation to an outside lawyer and planned a major infrastructure policy rollout for this week. Just a week after his "covfefe" tweet took the internet by storm, "despite the constant negative press covfefe", White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Trump's tweets should be taken as official statements.

Trump was addressing reporters at the White House for the first time since Comey's explosive appearance, in which he branded the president a liar and said he believed he was sacked over his handling of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into Russian election meddling.

FOLKENFLIK: Trump has tweeted rhetorical fire against the mayor of London after the latest terror attack there. Acting Attorney General Sally Yates, a holdover from the President Barack Obama's administration, was sacked by Trump after she declined to defend his executive order on immigration. Aides hustled to mitigate the damage.

Indeed, the president's free-wheeling, undisciplined style has made it almost impossible for the White House to regroup after weeks of damaging reports about possible ties between his campaign and Russian Federation, as well as a steady drumbeat of speculation about internal conflict and disarray.

CHRIS CUOMO: Of course it is. With that in mind, a software developer in Missouri has created a new bot that transforms Trump's unhinged social media rants into the official statements they are.

CUOMO: It's not social media.

But none of that changes the fact that most of America would prefer our president to, you know, be president and stuff.

In a series of tweets, he undermined his own lawyers by poor-talking the rewritten executive order, which was drafted to defend against lawsuits alleging that the ban discriminated on the basis of religion. "Please understand the difference".

FOLKENFLIK: Gorka betrayed contempt. Cuomo was disbelieving.

The legal challenge was likely written before Spicer's statement, but his classification of the tweets as "official statements" can only make it more hard for the Trump administration to argue that his account is not a public forum.

Spicer's counterpart Sarah Huckabee Sanders also lamented the media obsession with the tweets and celebrated them as a way for Trump to speak directly and unfiltered to his followers, but regretting that the media obsesses "over every period, dot". Three people briefed on the matter said the process has been bogged down by a lack of decision-making in the West Wing over how to proceed, as well as reluctance from some of those the White House hoped to recruit about serving a president who keeps getting in his own way. Even still, that means millions of actual people are watching as Trump uses his mobile phone to alienate allies, attack the free press, ignore hate crimes, and disseminate misinformation on a daily, and sometimes hourly basis. And, oh, how wrong we were.

Conway, about 24 hours earlier, had mocked reporters for paying so much to what Trump says on Twitter while paying much less attention to what he does as president. "I think it's frankly refreshing". It is the most important social media account operated by the US government or a USA government official right now. "I think it's disastrous for him on the governing side", said political analyst John Jackson, with the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.

In addition, the experts argued that this does not disable the user from seeing Trump's tweet but only blocks to reply on it from the account.

Let's be clear: There is NO ONE in the media who wants Trump to stop tweeting. You can't exclude people from this kind of forum simply because they criticized you or because they mocked you or because they disagreed with what you had to say.

Trump has been insistent that it's the news media whose at fault for the negative portrayal of his tweets.
