Rays' Kevin Kiermaier on DL with broken hip after slide

"He's going to be out a while, " manager Kevin Cash said.

Kiermaier was hurt while sliding awkwardly into first base during Tampa Bay's win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Tampa Bay also formally announced Kevin Kiermaier's placement on the DL for a hip fracture and recalled Mallex Smith from Triple-A in a corresponding move. This means the Rays will be without their speedy outfielder for at least six to eight weeks, with his return likely to be no earlier than August, MLB.com reports.

"You always see bad things happen when people slide into first base", Kiermaier said after the contest.

This is obviously a big blow to the Rays. He's hitting.258/.329/.408 (104 OPS+) with 10 doubles, two triples, seven homers and 10 steals as well, so he's an asset both at the plate and on the field. In 81 career games at the Major League Baseball level, Smith is a.241/.319/.358 hitter with 19 stolen bases.

Kiermaier signed a six-year, $53 million contract extension in the offseason. Once considered the Atlanta Braves' center fielder of the future, Smith was traded to the Seattle Mariners for pitching back in January and on the very same day to the Rays for prospects.

Featherston appeared in 19 games for the Phillies in 2016, hitting.115 with three total hits while covering at second base.

Tampa Bay started play Friday at 31-31.
