The president said Comey's testimony on Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee mostly vindicated his previous claims about their interactions.

Mr Trump has branded his former FBI director a "leaker", a day after Mr Comey gave testimony in which he accused Mr Trump of trying to quash an investigation and lying about him and the FBI.

He said the president had pressured him to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, whom Mr Trump fired for misleading the White House over M Flynn's contacts with Moscow's ambassador.

"I would be glad to tell him (special counsel Robert Mueller) exactly what I told you", Trump said at a joint news press conference in the Rose Garden of the White House with the visiting Romanian President. "I hardly know the man, I'm not going to say, 'I want you to pledge allegiance, '"Trump said".

"Mr Trump also seized on Mr Comey's revelation that he had directed a friend to release memos documenting his conversations with the President to a reporter: ".and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" he tweeted. That was an excuse by the Democrats, who lost an election that some people think they shouldn't have lost.

Senator Tim Kaine, the 2016 Democratic vice presidential candidate, said on Friday that Comey's testimony provided a wealth of information for both the congressional and special counsel investigations.

The Republican president stopped short of saying that Mr Comey lied under oath.

Republican Senator Susan Collins called on Sunday for Trump to "voluntarily turn them over" to the Senate Intelligence Committee and to the special counsel, Robert Mueller, investigating possible collusion between Trump aides and Russian Federation.

Asked if there were tapes of his meetings with Comey, Trump said, "Oh, you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer". "And you wonder if - it's unusual to me, and I've done a lot of cases for 40 years of practicing law nearly, and at the highest levels including the Supreme Court - that you have a situation, I think this is unprecedented, where the testimony was reviewed", Sekulow said.

A member of Trump's legal team, Jay Sekulow, told ABC on Sunday that Trump would "address the issue of the tapes, whether the tapes exist or not, next week".

During a press conference Friday, Trump refused to make any kind of firm statement on the possibility, simply talking around the idea. "One hundred per cent...."

Referring to his own sacking, Comey said that the Trump administration had started a public campaign of "lies, plain and simple" to undercut his and the bureau's credibility.

Comey said he had the memos leaked in hopes of prompting an appointment of a special counsel to the Russian Federation investigation.

He also accused Qatar, a key US military partner, of funding terrorism "at a very high level, " and said solving the problem in the tiny Persian Gulf nation could be "the beginning of the end of terrorism".
