- People throughout Putnam County are on edge after two corrections officers were killed by two inmates, who are now on the run.

The US Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are involved along with several other agencies.

After killing the guards, the inmates approached a dark green Honda Civic that was stopped nearby and demanded that the driver give them the vehicle, Putnam County Sheriff spokeswoman Teresa Slade said. Why wait, spending hours and days looking over your shoulder and wondering when we will kick the door in.

According to officials, the two are armed with.40 caliber Glock pistols that belonged to the officers.

According to the sheriff, Rowe and Dubose are "dangerous beyond description".

Slade said a witness saw the men escape in a dark green Honda with a Georgia tag: RBJ6601.

The Georgia Department of Corrections identified the guards as Christopher Monica and Curtis Billue, both officers at Baldwin State Prison.

Deal says of the officers: "The selflessness and courage of these two fearless souls will not be forgotten, nor will their sacrifice and service".

His voice shaking, he said, "I had their blood on my shoes". Dubose had a prior arrest in the area but no family connections, the sheriff said. "And they're distraught right now just as you and I would be". During transfers, guards don't wear bullet proof vests, according to Greg Dozier, Corrections Commissioner.

"Today, two families lost everything in a heinous and senseless act of violence perpetrated at the hands of cowards", Deal stated. "We see our officers as our family", Dozier said.

Bruce Billue is a brother of Curtis Billue, 58, one of guards who was shot to death.

Two officers were on the state bus, which is standard protocol, he said. 31 other prisoners were on board the bus and they all stayed behind until officers arrived on scene.

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said during his Senate testimony this morning that federal resources are being deployed to help catch the escaped convicts. However, I am asking you to surrender yourselves to the nearest law enforcement officer as soon as possible.

WGCL-TV reports Rowe was convicted on charges of aggravated assault and armed robbery. "Dubose is described as a white man standing 6'1", weighing 140 pounds.

Detectives described Rowe as a white man who has brown hair and blue eyes. He is 6-feet tall and he weights roughly 150 pounds.

The Sheriff's office said this afternoon that authorities don't know what the prisoners are wearing, and believe that they have most likely shed their prison uniforms.
