Gingrich: Mueller Investigation 'Poisoned Fruit' After Comey Testimony

Comey admitted he leaked the information as part of the FBI's probe into Russia's involvement in USA elections and the connections of the president's former national security adviser Michael Flynn with Russian officials.

Trump, who had not posted on his Twitter account Thursday as Comey accused the administration of spreading "lies", struck back with an early morning tweet in which he said, "Wow, Comey is a leaker". I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document, " Comey said.

Comey said in his testimony that he took the President's statement to be an inappropriate directive.

The now-fired director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation says he was so concerned about Donald Trump that he chronicled their conversations in notes, later tipped off the media about those notes to force the appointment of a special investigator, and that the investigator is now likely probing whether the president committed the crime of obstructing justice.

Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers and other critics say Comey's clams that Trump leaned on him to somehow drop the Russian Federation investigation could amount to an obstruction of justice.

Trump also said he would "100 per cent" be willing to testify under oath that he didn't demand a pledge of personal loyalty from Comey.

"I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future", Trump said Friday of the possibility of having tapes.

Former FBI Director James Comey testifies before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 United States presidential election on Capitol Hill in Washington June 8, 2017. "I didn't obey that, but that's the way I took it", Comey said.

Comey, who was sacked by Trump in May, delivered a scathing indictment of the president on Thursday at a congressional hearing in which he accused Trump of trying to block the investigation into Flynn.

Comey testified Thursday that he chose to pass on his notes of meetings with Trump to a Columbia professor friend of his to leak to the New York Times after perceiving the Trump tapes tweet as a threat.

Trump also sought to discredit Comey due to his admission that he leaked details of his meetings with Trump in hopes of prompting an independent investigation into the matter. "If he were the president of a college or an important think tank, he could pursue the issues that mean the most to him and not be anxious about trying to make anyone happy".

Comey said he believed he was sacked because of the Russian Federation probe, which has moved steadily closer to the White House, with investigators examining Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. But the greatest outcry came when Comey publicly announced that the FBI might re-open the investigation just days before the presidential election.

This doesn't sound like obstruction of justice. "And we are supposed to believe this will be an objective, unbiased investigation?"

Trump ignored a question on how he could accuse Comey of lying on one hand, and being truthful on the other.
