NHL Expansion Draft: Ottawa Senators Protection Strategy

The NHL will prohibit the trading or signing of players for all teams except Las Vegas at 3 p.m. Teams must submit their list of protected players for the expansion draft at 5 p.m.

The team has already signed three free agents: Vadim Shipachyov, Reid Duke and Tomas Hyka.

The expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights added former NHLer Ryan Craig to their staff as an assistant coach, the team announced Friday.

So what is the ideal type of player the Golden Knights will be looking for at the draft? Las Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee has a lot of decisions to make. Taking on a contract that goes into the summer of 2020 is a lot to ask, but if it nets them two different young players, it might be worth it.

The Golden Knights will be allowed first crack at any pending unrestricted or restricted free agent, as long as that player is not protected in the Expansion Draft. "So in those instances we'll be able to get young players or some draft picks that will help us down the road".

The entire idea of an expansion draft is to let an expansion franchise take players from existing teams.

The big moment. We're unsure how this reveal will be done, but we know it will be during the annual league Awards show on NBCSN and Sportsnet. New Sabres GM Jason Botterill will have some hard decisions pending, especially which goaltender to protect in the expansion draft.

Rounds Two through Seven will be begin at 10 a.m.in Chicago. The interest might center on three Leafs forwards, Brendan Leipsic, Matt Martin and Connor Carrick, as each had consistency issues on the ice last season.

That could alter free agency, which begins July 1.

Players with no-movement clauses must be protected unless they agree to waive it. A team can protect 11 players - seven forwards, three defenseman and one goalie - or nine players - eight total skaters and one goalie.

At least one defenseman who is under contract for the coming season, and either played 40 plus games last season or 70 plus games over the last two seasons.

Teams must expose one goalie under contract for 2017-18, or they can expose a restricted free-agent goalie after tendering a qualifying offer. Now the Vegas Golden Knights are finally starting to take shape. But if there is a 12th player that a team wants to keep, they can make a deal with McPhee and Vegas. Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Vegas Golden Knights Head Coach Gerard Gallant and President Kerry Bubolz will also be present to mark the occasion, which will unveil an exciting collaboration between the beloved Downtown Las Vegas property and Las Vegas' first-ever major league professional sports organization.

Because the league has failed to increase revenue in any significant way, it seems like the salary-cap ceiling will remain around $73 million for next season.
