An American college student whose parents say has been in a coma while serving a 15-year prison term in North Korea was released and returned to the United States Tuesday as the Trump administration revealed a rare exchange with the reclusive country.

"We wish him well, but we have issued travel warnings to Americans and suggested they not travel to North Korea for their own safety", U.S. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon told reporters after discussing the North Korean missile threat and other issues with Japanese counterparts.

According to Trump administration officials, information about Warmbier's condition was transmitted on June 6 by North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations to Joseph Yun, the State Department's special representative for North Korea, at a meeting in NY.

"We have no comment on Mr. Warmbier's condition out of respect to him and the family".

New details are emerging about USA efforts to secure the release of American college student Otto Warmbier after more than 17 months in detention in North Korea.

Warmbier is expected to arrive at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center later later this evening. In response, the US has taken a tough tack, and recently began deploying the advanced anti-missile defense known as THAAD to South Korea.

North Korea announced Warmbier's arrest in late January 2016, saying he committed an anti-state crime with "the tacit connivance of the US government and under its manipulation".

Despite the increasingly hostile US-North Korean relationship, the Warmbiers said they were encouraged by US President Donald Trump's willingness to improve relations with North Korea.

Americans are regarded as enemies in North Korea because the two countries never signed a peace treaty at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Mr Tillerson said he would not comment on Mr Warmbier's condition, but added that USA officials are continuing "to have discussions" with North Korea about the release of three other jailed American citizens.

Tension has ratcheted up in recent months between the United States and North Korea over the latter's series of missile tests.

In Warmbier's hometown of Wyoming, just outside of Cincinnati, residents helped tie blue and white ribbons, Wyoming High School's colors, to trees and said news of his release had sent waves of shock and joy through the community.
