South Korea and the United States agreed past year to deploy the THAAD unit in response to North Korea's relentless development of its ballistic missiles, and nuclear weapons, in defiance of U.N. sanctions.

"It would be a war like nothing we have seen since 1953", Mattis said, pointing to the end of the Korean War.

After a joint investigation with United States experts, Seoul said they were flown from North Korea and had been pre-programmed to fly over South Korean military installations. "It would be a very, very serious war".

A suspected North Korean drone had taken photographs of an advanced US anti-missile battery in South Korea before it crashed while apparently on its way back home, the South Korean military said on Tuesday.

Last month, Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart, the US Defence Intelligence Agency chief, said it was "inevitable" that a nuclear weapon launched from North Korea would hit the US mainland.

North Korea is believed to possess 300 drones of at least seven different types, according to Joseph S. Bermudez, Jr., a North Korea defense and intelligence expert.

Infantino congratulated the President on the country's successful hosting of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, and reportedly offered assurances that FIFA would always be open to the possibility of events that could use football to improve inter-Korean relations.

Drones are a relatively new addition to North Korea's arsenal. "And after analyzing data we found that the warhead had detonation system plus the warhead is only 70 cm wide so it can be mounted on most ballistic missiles".

Foreign Affairs Minister Gerry Brownlee has publicly acknowledged for the first time he's concerned North Korea could develop a missile with enough power to reach New Zealand.

Separately, former National Basketball Association (NBA) star Dennis Rodman is expected to arrive in North Korea on Tuesday.

North Korea on Wednesday called on South Korea to take actions to ease military tensions along the inter-Korean border ahead of the 17th anniversary of a historic summit between the two Koreas.

"We have reached the final stage of preparations to test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile", Kim said in his New Year's address, adding that, "Research and development of cutting edge arms equipment is actively progressing". "If that is the case, which it may not be, North Korea would exceed last year's total number of missile tests by 3-4 tests", Stangarone said. North Korea called the system a provocation aimed at bolstering US military hegemony in the region.
