Penguins get big ratings for NBC in Stanley Cup Final

Carl Hagelin sealed the win by scoring into an empty net with 14 seconds left.

The Pittsburgh Penguins won the 2017 Stanley Cup against the Nashville Predators in a six-game series and managed to pull off an impressive repeat in the process that hasn't been seen since the Detroit Red Wings in the 1990s.

Late on Sunday night, the Penguins lifted their second Stanley Cup in two years, marking their third in nine years and their fifth as a franchise. An entire subgenre of basketball history, for instance, is devoted to determining which playoff games through the years were supposedly swayed by which referees. Despite finishing with fewer playoff points than teammate Evgeni Malkin, the league still felt he deserved the award for his consistent play throughout the playoffs. On a points-per-game basis, Malkin's totals of 832 points in 706 regular-season games and 157 points in 149 playoff games are far more impressive. This is a game played and officiated by human beings who sometimes make mistakes. Crosby now joins Penguins President Mario Lemieux and former Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Bernie Parent as the only players to win the Conn Smythe Trophy in consecutive seasons.

Last year, the Penguins also clinched the Cup on a Sunday, and the parade was held the following Wednesday.

The Predators should have scored the pivotal first goal of Game 6. Pittsburgh's 6.8 average for all playoff games on NBC networks was tops in the country.

Forget a golden anniversary: The Penguins will cap their 50th season with their names on the most famous silver cup in sports — again.

"I think they proved what they're capable of". "It means a lot to me to be out here for a second year in a row and to celebrate it with my family". You think about that your whole life.

Forwards Jake Guentzel, Carter Rowney and Josh Archibald played throughout the postseason, including the Stanley Cup Final against the Nashville Predators.

How great was the story of the Predators' first march to a Stanley Cup Final?

Fleury was on the bench for the last four games of the conference final and the entire Stanley Cup final against Nashville, but he led Pittsburgh to series wins against Columbus and Washington after Matt Murray suffered an injury to start the playoffs. Half of Murray's victories also ended with a shutout, which led all goaltenders throughout the playoffs. Given that the NHL isn't any closer to getting it all right all the time or even most of the time, maybe it's time to take a step back and allow the human element to return to all aspects of the game, improving the quality and flow of the action, especially since most reviews are created to take goals away, which is counterintuitive to what the league is trying to achieve in driving up offense.

"But it was still the idea of sharing the cup with his friends, family and friends". Nashville roared back at home to even things up, but the Penguins routed Nashville to set up Game 6. [Image by Patrick Smith/Getty Images]"He's been a really important mentor for me". This team was different, different from past year even, and not necessarily in a talent-laden way. When a ref is hit by a puck or caught amid the scrum of the players, it is a momentary jolt, a tear in the flow of the sport.
